Our pilgrimage to Lourdes can only be described as a time of grace and lasting deep friendship. It’s an incredible place and for Sophie, a completely new experience. I (Katy) was lucky enough to attend 2 years ago, however, what makes this journey so great is that each pilgrimage is unique.

This year’s theme in Lourdes was “Hail, full of grace the Lord is with thee” and it was our honour to be able to go this year as volunteers, at the hands of others. It truly has strengthened our faith and allowed us to deepen our relationship with God; understanding our place as his children.

We were fortunate to overlap with the international military pilgrimage who brought with them thousands of men and women from over 40 nations, which was an exceptional sight: marching in the streets, playing music and leading a torchlight procession. We’re forever grateful for the opportunity to see this melange of languages, cultures and ethnicities, united and reconciled in peace.

We met many wonderful people, took part in many special moments of prayer and reflection and to understand the real meaning of devotion and compassion. It was a tiring week, one where we, as young people, learnt to work hard and selflessly. But spending time with everyone, especially the assisted pilgrims is extremely inspiring: their faith, positivity, and strength taught us valuable lessons and made the experience even more meaningful.

Lighting the candle for the parish, alongside our school candle, was a very peaceful and emotional experience. We were able to have a small private period of reflection in the late evening where we all gathered around in the chapel of candles near the river and prayed for everyone back at home. It was our privilege to be able to carry your prayers, intentions and burdens, to bring them before Mary at the grotto.

We would like to express our sincere thanks to everyone at Hemel East Parish, Saint Michael’s Catholic High School, and SOLL for their help, encouragement, and generosity in helping make this journey possible. This kindness allowed us the opportunity to experience something very special, and we are extremely grateful.
