Anointing of the Sick

The Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is offered to those who are very sick, about to undergo serious surgery, or preparing for that final journey which will take them from this life to the next. It is a Sacrament that offers a healing which is sometimes physical and always spiritual. When a Catholic is admitted to hospital the family is encouraged to ask the staff to request the priest who is the hospital chaplain to visit and anoint their loved one.

A sacrament is an outward sign established by Jesus Christ to confer inward grace. In more basic terms, it is a rite that is performed to convey God’s grace to the recipient, through the power of the Holy Spirit.

The Sacrament’s Institution

Like all the sacraments, holy anointing was instituted by Jesus Christ during his earthly ministry. The Catechism explains, “This sacred anointing of the sick was instituted by Christ our Lord as a true and proper sacrament of the New Testament.

If you would like to receive this sacrament, please call the Parish Office.
